With an outstanding cup score of 90 points, the Wush Wush from Coffea diversa is a rare Ethiopian Heirloom now flourishing in the mountains of Biolley, Costa Rica. Originally from the Kaffa region – considered one of coffee’s birthplaces – Wush Wush is known for its tall stature, delicate leaves, and a complex cup profile. Though less commonly cultivated than Geisha, its expressive florals and fruit-forward character have earned it a cult following among roasters and judges alike.
At Coffea diversa, Wush Wush is grown among native shade trees and wild coffee plants in a uniquely biodiverse environment. Through honey processing and careful fermentation, this coffee delivers a vibrant cup that balances bright acidity with floral sweetness and tropical fruit complexity. It’s a rare and expressive varietal, produced with intention by Gonzalo Hernandez and his team – a standout example of how origin and innovation can come together in a cup.
Coffea diversa’s innovative and eco-friendly six-step coffee cultivation process begins by pulping cherries the same day they’re harvested, ensuring the highest quality. Their unique processing methods—Washed, Semi-Washed, and Natural—enhance the coffee’s flavour profiles, while manual selection and careful drying guarantee consistency in every batch.
For maximum freshness, the coffee is stored in a specially designed cellar made of pine logs to protect against humidity and is packed in 10kg plastic bags inside jute sacks.. This approach, combined with Gonzalo Hernandez’ commitment to sustainable practices, sets Coffea diversa apart, delivering a distinctive and exceptional coffee experience.
There is nothing similar to Coffea diversa. Like in a flower garden, where you would find many types of plants producing many different kinds of flowers, in the Coffea diversa garden, you would find many rare coffees. A unique place with the most extensive private collection of coffee in the world.
Founded in 2003 by Mr. Gonzalo Hernandez, Coffea diversa has two main gardens, one in Costa Rica and another in Guatemala. The Costa Rica garden is located in a very remote area in the Biolley district, right next to the largest nature reserve in Central America, La Amistad.
